Tarte Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette
Pros
- Earthy neutrals that flatter almost every skin tone and eye color
- Versatile palette that can be used for natural looks or full glam
Cons

"The variety of earth tones makes it a universal palette for natural or smoky looks." She even likes using some of the darker colors on the lash line (either instead of or on top of eyeliner). One thing she points out is to be mindful of the pigment: "It has a lot of payoff, so start with very little product and build it up as needed," she advises. Pros

What to look for when shopping for an eyeshadow palette
Shopping for an eyeshadow palette is fun, but there are quite a few on the market. To avoid getting overwhelmed, consider keeping the following in mind:
✔️ Colors offered: "I like to find shades that will accentuate your natural eye color," says Gjieli. Below, we break down exactly colors will make certain colored eyes pop, but most importantly, pick colors that you'll enjoy using: While some might like to keep it simple, others "are comfortable experimenting with makeup looks and probably want to find palettes with a wide variety of colors," she adds.
✔️ Number of shades included: Gjieli encourages her clients to have a palette that includes at least three different shades in it. She recommends it has one light highlighting shade to accent the inner corners of your eye and under your brow, one neutral shade to cover the base of your eye "from your lash line, blended all the way up to your orbital bone," says Gjieli, and a deeper accent shade "to deepen the outer corners, crease, lash line, or blended into the middle of your base shade," she adds. Of course, you'll have more options with more colors, but be sure you like all (or most) of the colors in the palette before investing — if you only use a couple colors in a large, pricey palette, it may not be worth the splurge.
What shade of eyeshadow is best for me?
The best eyeshadow shade for you all depends on your eye color, and of course, preference. You can use a color wheel to help find the right shade for your eye color. For this old-school trick, see which hue sits opposite your eye color to make the iris pop. Here's a cheat sheet:
✔️ Brown eyes are a mix of all primary colors so there are lots of options. Try a purple-y hue or bronze-y metallics to bring out depth in brown eyes.
✔️ Green eyes pop with purples and pinks.
✔️ Blue eyes look brighter with orange and yellow shadows.
✔️ Hazel eyes stand out with orange and coral shades.

What are some tips for applying eyeshadow?
Here are some beginner-friendly tips for applying eyeshadow successfully:
✔️ Blend, blend, blend: To avoid harsh lines between colors when applying your eyeshadow, "make sure you blend a lot with a soft fluffy brush," says Gjieli. "Remember that lighter colors reflect light (making an area look closer/bigger), while darker shades make an area look more sunken in."
✔️ Don't overdo it: With some pigmented palettes, it's easy to pick up a lot of color on your brush. But "do not apply too much dark eyeshadow on your crease," advises Gjieli. "Focus on your lash line and outer corners and be sure to blend well."
✔️ Consider the eyeshadow's finish: "Sparkly and shimmery colors can be lots of fun, but if you're worried about the appearance of wrinkles, your best bet is a matte palette," explains Gjieli.
✔️ Stay calm: "If you feel like anything has gone wrong, like your shadow is too dark, do not panic and start wiping pigment off," says Gjieli. "This will create raccoon eyes." Instead, she says to apply a lighter shade over the entire lid and continue blending until the color softens.
How often should you replace your eyeshadow palette?
About once a year, but "powders have a much longer shelf life than creams or liquids," says Gjieli. "Around 12 months after opening your palette, you'll find that your shadows are a bit less pigmented and might be harder to blend." However, "if you're using dirty brushes or fingers on your shadow palettes, they'll expire even sooner and might be contaminated with bacteria over time," she says, so make sure you're cleaning your makeup brushes often.
